Discover Ajaccio

Corsica was never on my list of European destinations to visit. My first visit was because it was a stop on a cruise. All I knew was that Napolean Bonaparte was born on the island.

We docked in the capital Ajaccio. A problem with visiting a locale on a cruise ship is that there is never quite enough time to do or see “everything.”

My initial impression of Ajaccio is that it is not as used to cruise ship passengers as other Mediterranean ports and I found this charming. It was wonderful to be in a port that did not cater to tourists. I am sure this will change as more and more cruiselines are stopping in this port.

I found Ajaccio to be a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It offers so much more than just a glimpse into the life of Napoleon. With its stunning landscapes, rich heritage, and delectable cuisine, Ajaccio invites travelers to explore its many treasures. I wish I had time to explore more of the island beyond Ajaccio, but with less than 12 hours in port, I was nervous to venture too far.

A Stroll Through History

Start your journey at the Maison Bonaparte, the ancestral home of Napoleon, which has been transformed into a museum. Here, visitors can explore the rooms where the future emperor grew up, adorned with period furniture and memorabilia that provide a window into his early life.

Just a stone's throw away lies the Ajaccio Cathedral, a beautiful Baroque structure built in the 16th century. This serene place of worship is where Napoleon was baptized, and its intricate frescoes and peaceful ambiance make it a must-visit. For those who appreciate art, the Fesch Museum is a treasure trove of Italian Renaissance paintings, including works by Caravaggio and Botticelli, reflecting the artistic influences that shaped Corsica.

Natural Wonders

Ajaccio is not just a city steeped in history; it is also a gateway to some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in Corsica. The Sanguinaires Islands, visible from the coastline, are a stunning group of islets known for their rugged beauty and vibrant sunsets. A short boat ride can take you to these remote islands, where you can hike along scenic trails, spot diverse wildlife, and swim in crystal-clear waters.

For those who enjoy hiking, there are many trails that showcase the island's dramatic mountains and lush forests.

If you prefer a more leisurely experience, the beautiful Plage de Capo di Feno is perfect for sunbathing and swimming with its golden sands and turquoise waters.

Culinary Delights

No visit to Ajaccio would be complete without indulging in the island's culinary offerings. The local cuisine is a delightful mix of French and Italian influences, featuring fresh seafood, rich cheeses, and cured meats. Be sure to try Figatellu, a traditional Corsican sausage, and Brocciu, a fresh cheese often used in savory pastries and desserts.

For a truly authentic experience, visit one of the local markets, such as Marché des Halles, where you can sample local produce, cheeses, and pastries. Pair your meal with a glass of Patrimonio wine produced in the nearby vineyards, and savor the flavors of Corsica.

Cultural Vibrancy

Ajaccio is also a hub of cultural activity, with a lively atmosphere that comes alive during festivals and events. The Festa di a Nazione, held in September, celebrates Corsican identity with music, dance, and local delicacies. Throughout the summer months, the city hosts various concerts and art exhibitions, showcasing the talents of local artists and musicians.

As the sun sets, the lively Place de Gaulle becomes a gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. Here, you can enjoy a leisurely evening at one of the many cafés or restaurants, soaking in the vibrant ambiance while savoring a glass of local wine.

Ajaccio is a city that beautifully encapsulates the spirit of Corsica, with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and delectable cuisine. Whether exploring historical sites, hiking through breathtaking nature, or indulging in local flavors, Ajaccio promises an unforgettable experience. So pack your bags and get ready to discover the enchanting allure of this Mediterranean gem.
